Poems byTony Mitton

Have a look at these poems

For our next meeting, do these activities
  • Enlarge each of the poems by another couplet, following the style

  • As regards phonological teaching points

    - what would you exploit on l.1 and ls.13 & 14?
    - what would you contrast on l.15 cf. l.24?
    - which stressing patterns would you mark in the compounds present in the texts?
    - which phrasal verbs would you deal with?

  • Other lines you propose to analyse?

  • How would you teach your findings? (Bring the concrete activities well designed )

Base your work on the principles we discussed after your first round of observations, and your own self-experience. Determine the age and level of the goal group you have in mind while devising this project.
The aim of this activity is to strike on workable and realistic procedures to activate the phonological aspects in the language class.

And... last of all... Have the poems ready to be enjoyed! They saw the light of day as raps... You may try!

Monty Python - The Meaning of Life - Death

Here you´ll watch the full version of this episode (remember we had an adapted text).
Find the different accents the characters use, as well as the communicative purpose of: - different uses of contrastive focus; - uses of key; - evidence of who is in control in the different situations. Remember to justify your answers. Once ready, you can share this with us all via the comments in this same blog.

Accents of English - 2

Let´s listen to some other accents around Great Britain. Let´s take Scouse, from the Liverpool area. Now Geordie, from Newcastle, and yet another rendering. A tour of Scottish accent, with a touch of Hollywood - (a link that may prove useful in this topic) and a touch of humour. Now to the West, with some Welsh various voices. In Ireland you may hear this and this more serious lesson. Some examples from Cockney, in two versions. Now an example of Estuary English. This is about all for this post.

Accents of English

Here goes some information concerning Estuary English, taken from Prof. Wells´home page. And in David Rosewarne's work, you can learn more about this dialect of the London area. Wells has another interesting article on this issue. Of course, these are but samples of the load of material you can find and read about this topic. Contributions are welcome.

Welcome
